* Please note that Adult Health Behavior data reflect information about the population age 18 and older.  We recommend caution in using these estimates to calculate percentage rates at the zip code level, and we do not recommend comparing zip codes in terms of percentage rates.  Users who choose to calculate rates should use the Adult Population as the denominator, not Total Population.  (The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, the source of Adult Health Behavior data, does not survey children and adolescents

To Create a Map

  1. Under the ‘Create a Map’ menu on the ‘Start Page,’ click on “interactive map of Virginia.”

  2. After following the above step, a map of the Commonwealth of Virginia with several planning districts will be visible from the center of the browser. Features of the map include:

    A. Control Buttons (across the top of the map). From left to right they are used to:

    • Recenter Map; click button, move crosshairs over appropriate location on map and click once.
    • Zoom In; click button, move crosshairs over appropriate location on map. As you zoom in, you’ll notice more and more features appear, including ZIP codes and various labels.
    • Zoom Out; click button, move crosshairs over appropriate location on map.
    • Refresh Map; click button to redraw the map including any changes you have made.
    • Return Map to Default View; click button to return map to its default view.
    • Change Map Size Dropdown Menu; select map size.

    B. Legend (located to the right of the map). The legend provides information on the following features:
    • Health Districts
    • Counties
    • ZIP Codes
    • Divided Highways
    • Major Roads

To view divided highways and major roads, click on the boxes to the right of these features.

  3. Click on the blue button labeled, ‘Create a Map.’

  4. On the ‘Create a Map’ page, select a planning district by using the dropdown menu. To map more than one planning district, hold down the control (ctrl) key and click on the desired locations.

  5. Under the ‘Background Thematic (Color Shading)’ option, select the category of interest (ie.
